Red Yeast Rice & Pregnant Women
By James Daltons

High cholesterol is something that needs to be controlled as it can have a negative effect on an individual's overall health. There are different products available to control cholesterol from drugs to supplements. This article will take a look at the use of one such supplement red yeast rice and how it affects pregnant women. We will examine if it is safe for expecting mothers to take and its effects on pregnancy.

Red yeast rice is a powerful supplement that is used to lower cholesterol. It has been proven to be very successful in reducing cholesterol levels in people. Because of its effectiveness, it has become extremely popular. Red yeast rice naturally contains statins, this is the same product that can also be found in cholesterol lowering prescription medication.

Is This Cholesterol Lowering Supplement Safe for Pregnant Women?

As it stands right now, red yeast rice supplements that contain lovastatins are not safe for pregnant women to take. These supplements fall into Category X as it relates to medications and women who are pregnant. This category is determined based off studies that are done on women who are pregnant an how certain medications interact with the baby. The results often show that women who take these medicines often deliver babies with birth defects or there are some other complications which may take place.

Are All Red Yeast Rice Supplements Unsafe?

Not all of the supplements available contain lovastatin, which is the main ingredient that places the product into Category X. There are many that are safe, however it is not recommend that women who are pregnant should take these supplements. The reason behind this is based off the fact that red yeast rice that contains lovastatins have not been approved by the FDA. Because of this, many manufacturers will often sell their products with the statins included, but they won't label them showing that they do contain them. These statins are extremely powerful and can have a negative effect on the fetus. For that reason women should avoid this medication.

Red yeast rice has been proven to be a very good treatment for people who suffer from high cholesterol. These same compounds have also been shown to be extremely dangerous to unborn babies and there is also a possibility that it could be transferred to breastfeeding babies.

These are very powerful compounds that can cause considerable harm to young infants. It is not known if these harmful products are transferred to babies from breast-milk. For that reason mothers should avoid it.

Red Yeast Rice, Statin and Breastfeeding

Red Yeast Rice and Grapefruit Products
By James Daltons

When it comes to lowering cholesterol, there are a wide range of medications that are prescribed to people. Many times people shy away from these drugs and go for more natural ways to control their cholesterol levels. One product that people use is red yeast rice. This article will look at red yeast rice and if it is safe to be used with grapefruit.

What is Red Yeast Rice?

Red yeast rice is a natural supplement that many people use to help reduce their cholesterol levels. It has been used for hundreds of years in China as a food coloring, preservative and spice. Aside from being used in food, it has also been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for various health issues such as indigestion, poor circulation and diarrhea.

The supplement is created by fermenting special yeast on rice. This yeast not only gives the rice its red color, but also causes natural substances to developed called statin. Statin is used in many cholesterol lowering medications, because of its ability to halt the production of cholesterol. Because it occurs naturally in the supplement, many people opt for this product, especially if they have negative side effects related to cholesterol-lowering medications.

Grapefruit juice

People who are taking or plan to take the supplement and also enjoy eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice, should take extra precautions. Grapefruit has been shown to enhance the overall effects of statins (found in red yeast rice). It has also been shown to boost the concentration of blood HM-CoA reducaste inhibitors by 15 times the normal levels. When this occurs, this greatly increases the chance of possible liver damage and negative side effects. Because the supplements have been shown to act similar to statins, it is very important that people who are taking the supplement should avoid grapefruit based products.

Individuals should take the time to speak with their healthcare professional if they want more information related to red yeast rice and grapefruit. The amount of grapefruit in an individual's diet should not be increased or decreased without talking to the doctor first. There could be serious side effects that could occur if done.

Red Yeast Rice is a great supplement for the treatment of cholesterol. Many people have had great success with it. It is important that people be careful in taking this product along with grapefruit. Some serious side effects can occur and it can be potentially dangerous.

How Dangerous Are Red Yeast Rice Side Effects?

By Max Wardlow

What are red yeast rice side effects? Is it a safe natural alternative to help support balanced cholesterol levels?

These are valid questions especially in view of the controversy generated around red yeast rice the last several years as several popular brands of red yeast rice (RYR) supplements were pulled from the market by the FDA.

RYR has been used for over a thousand years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a promoter of blood circulation and a digestive stimulant.

Recent research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine concludes that red yeast rice has significant cholesterol-lowering effects.

Based on recent research, 62 people who were unable to continue treatment with prescription cholesterol lowering drugs due to adverse side effects, took RYR supplements and made lifestyle adjustments for six months. After three months, the LDL (so-called "bad" cholesterol) levels of those taking the active supplements had declined 27%, compared to 6% in the placebo group.

Red Yeast Rice Side Effects - Is It Safe?

In 2007, several brands of popular RYR supplements were pulled from the market by the FDA. The official reason given was safety concerns because of the use of standardized extracts which FDA tests found contained high levels of lovastatin, the active ingredient in Mevacor, a prescription drug approved for marketing in the United States as a treatment for high cholesterol.

Although safety reasons were the official explanation for pulling the RYR products, there has been legal dispute as to whether RYR is a drug or a dietary supplement, involving the supplement manufacturers, the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, particularly producers of so-called "statin drugs."

Apparently, the safety concern is based on the known risks and side effects of prescription cholesterol lowering statin drugs which rely on lovastatin as the main active ingredient. The safety concern was for only certain red yeast rice supplements containing high levels of the standardized extract lovastatin. This is why manufacturers of holistic herbal remedies don't use or approve of the standardization process.

The standardization process involves the isolation and concentration of a single ingredient (lovastatin for example). This is done with harsh chemicals, traces of which can't be fully removed from the final product. It's a well known principle in traditional herbalism that isolation and concentration enhances the potency of a single ingredient while also increasing the risk of side effects.

Another recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava standardized extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years.

Red yeast rice in its natural state consists of 14 monacolin compounds such as monacolin K, a natural lovastatin. From a holistic point-of-view these other monacolins, along with its naturally occurring fatty acids, anti-oxidants and other nutrients, work together to enhance its cholesterol-balancing and other health enhancing benefits without producing negative side effects.

The mainstream medical community is slow to accept red yeast rice as an alternative to statin drugs, even though there is no solid evidence that RYR is unsafe. The quality of nutritional supplements on the market does vary and it's the responsibility of the supplement user to locate high quality products manufactured by companies that follow agreed upon good manufacturing practices (GMP).

If you have concerns about red yeast rice side effects, look for supplements produced without the use of standardized extracts. Take a little time to read labels and research products. If you have questions or concerns, consult your health care provider before starting any supplementation program.
